Valve Software has launched a Linux blog where the Linux community should be informed about the development efforts and progress of Steam on Linux. In the first blog post, named Steam’d Penguins, the plans for the upcoming version of Steam for Linux have been presented. Here is a brief summary of the first blog entry:
- Gabe Newell has been interested in porting Steam and Source Engine to Linux for a while now.
- 2011 a Linux team was established at Valve with the aim to investigate the possibility of porting the Steam client and Left 4 Dead 2 to Ubuntu. After a successful port of Left 4 Dead 2 to Ubuntu, the interest in Linux and at the same time the Linux team have grown at Valve.
- Currently, Valve primarily targets releasing of an full-featured Steam client, optimizing the OpenGL performance of Left 4 Dead 2 and porting additional Valve titles to Linux.
- The first version of the Steam client will be released for Ubuntu 12.04 with all the major features in the near future.
With the start of the Linux blog Valve shows the will to support Linux as a gaming platform and to build a community of Linux gamers and game developers helping them with it!
